There is something magical about catching fireflies in a jar!

One of my most frequent and most vivid childhood memories is of catching fireflies in a jar with my cousins on warm summer nights. After long days of swimming in the pool, eating ice cream, and playing baseball in the yard – if it was one of those great, lazy summer days – the only satisfying ending to a summer day was catching fireflies. We begged our parents to stay outdoors for just a little longer… a few more minutes… another two seconds… waiting, waiting for the fireflies to appear. And finally when we began to think that they would never appear, the first yellow light blinked. We’d scrounge the kitchen for unused glass jars and run out into the grassy fields, intent on capturing as many fireflies as possible. In the end, we each had a magical lantern of fireflies.
